Welcome To Ashworth Street Surgery

Thank you so much to those patients who have been supportive and helped reduce the footfall in the surgery and thank you for following Public Health guidance with grace. We understand that it is not ideal but the surgery environment needs to be as safe as it can be for our older and more vulnerable patients. We do not have the resources to deep clean the surgery and isolate staff members several times per day just because patients decide to ignore our advice to stay at home. Please avoid coming into the surgery unless it is really necessary , and not at all if you have a new cough or fever.
We are looking at working in different ways – we will swap appointments to telephone appointments where suitable and are looking at video consultations. Please consider getting set up for online prescription ordering and electronic prescribing to reduce the need to physically come into the building for routine prescriptions. This will reduce your own risk and that to our patients and staff.
There is a cohort of people who are very dismissive of COVID-19 and the 'Delay Phase' advice. Many comparing it to seasonal influenza. Our staff have seen this and are receiving abuse on a daily basis. Some patients have been abusive towards the GPs in the last week over the phone when they tried to establish the risk of corona virus before deciding how and where was best to clinically assess them.
Be in no doubt - the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic IS here; travel is no longer necessary as a risk. As this is a new virus, information is evolving daily but it is estimated that the majority of us (worst case estimates of 80%) will become infected. Our UK numbers are now starting to rise with a current estimated caseload of 10,000 cases. The vast majority will survive – indeed for younger healthier people it is often a relatively mild cold/flu type illness and so it can seem like it is 'not worth' self isolating - but people's loved ones will die from this virus, and one or more of them could be yours.
The point of self isolating for 7 days if you have 'a new continuous cough' or a 'fever over 37.8 degrees' and the new guidance for family members to self isolate for 14 days, is to slow down the rate of the presentations... to flatten the inevitable peak of case numbers that would happen otherwise. This is so that the NHS can create enough ITU and high dependency beds to manage the very sickest and save as many people as they can.
Please reference the the NHS 111 updated advice pages or the Government webpages for Covid19 and follow the advice to self isolate if it applies to you. Remember that you are protecting others more vulnerable than yourself. The thing about delay and 'flattening the peak' of presentations … is that it will only work if we all take the necessary measures BEFORE they seem necessary . If it works, people will say we overreacted – let's hope that happens.

As of today 11th March 2020, Ashworth Street Surgery has changed policy due to the ongoing Coronavirus situation. 

We are no longer allowing patients to collect paper prescriptions from the surgery. Instead you are required to nominate a pharmacy for them to be sent to electronically. This can be done by contacting your chosen pharmacy directly.  

To order prescriptions, please use the Patient Access app/site or speak to your nominated pharmacy directly, who will then forward the order to us electronically.  In order to register for Patient Access please visit: https://www.patientaccess.com/

Ashworth Street Surgery was formed in July 1999. There are seven doctors who form the partnership: Drs Steve Doyle, Dave Osborne, Jenny Nelson, Shalini Gadiyar, Mark Mudalige, Adam Simmons, Kevin Cody and Feroz Zafar . In addition to this we have Drs Elizabeth Knott, Swee Tan and Hassan Riaz who are salaried GP's, plus a number of training doctors, a nurse practitioner, a community nurse practitioner, practice nurses and health care assistants who compliment the team. There is also a large number of receptionists and administration staff who play a very important role in the everyday running of the practice.

Ashworth Street Surgery is committed to good medical care with continuity and offers a wide range of services. Our surgery times have been extended some mornings and evenings to provide some flexibilty for our working patients.

The practice has seen an increasing list size since it was formed and over time the surgery has developed a number of extensions at Ashworth Street to accommodate both additional clinicians and their own clinical consulting rooms. The most recent extension here at Ashworth Street was completed in July 2010 when a further six consulting rooms (fifteen in all) were developed on the first floor which also incorporates a lift to gain access.

Also in 2010 we saw the completion of our branch surgery in Norden. The surgery is based in what was the Norden Old Library on Edenfield Road. The practice has joined with our local neighbours Edenfield Road Surgery and we both share the upper floor, having two consulting rooms each Monday - Friday. From the feedback we have received from our patients, this has proved to be a huge success for both practices.

Reception at Ashworth Street is open from 8.00am to 6.30pm with no closure at lunchtime. All doctors from both practices will be holding sessions in Norden, so patients will be able to see a doctor of their choice for a pre-booked appointment, and both surgeries have open lists to take on new patients.

Disabled Access

The medical centre is fully accessible for wheelchairs. There is parking for the disabled by the main doors. Special toilet facilities with wide access doors are available for patients in wheelchairs. The practice also provides a portable "Audio Frequency Induction Loop System" (AFILS) for the hard of hearing. There is also a lift for access to the first-floor level consulting rooms.
